UNC Stat of the Day:

UNC 75, Illinois 70
What a game. Of course Illinois made a run as expected. In fact, they caught fire for the first 15 minutes of the second half. Deron Williams couldn't miss and Luther Head was on fire too. Illinois cut the lead to 7 at the 10 minute mark, but we kept fighting back. Then with 5 to go they tied it up! It didn't look good for us at that point. The momentum had swung in Illinois' favor, but we continued to make big plays.

Sean May was just unstoppable. We went to him like 6 straight times down the court and Illinois had no answer. Illinois best big man, James Augustine, was in foul trouble all game and fouled out with 0 points on only 9 minutes of play. May scored 26 points (tying his Dad Scott May during his championship game in '76), but Sean ended with 10 rebounds (2 more than his dad). I was concerned after we repeatedly went to May that our outside shooters would get cold. And I think that actually helped Illinois get back in the game. That and the fact that the refs wouldn't call a moving screen to save their lives. Illinois players were doing running screens and the refs didn't call it. This made for some wide open 3's for Illinois.

But in the end, Felton came up HUGE with a big steal in the final minutes and made 3 key free throws. Luther Head had an open look for a 3 from the side to tie, but it banged off the rim.

First championship for UNC in 12 years....First championship for Coach Williams....Fitting end for the 3 seniors that experienced an 8-20 season….Tourney MVP for Sean May….Maybe this will shut-up all the critics that said Carolina has the most talent in the country, but not the best team.
Comments:
I am confused about the Illinois moving screens. What exactly is allowed and what is not? And what is the appropriate call, a foul on the screener? The CBS commentators were even making references about them in the last 10 minutes of the game. Why were the referees unwilling to make the call? Is it because they missed the call for the first 38 (Illinois) games of the year and were afraid to make a correction at the end?

Screens are suppose to be set in place, not moving. Of course they allow some slight upper body movement by the screener, but they definitely shouldn't allow someone to be moving their feet while screening. I saw a couple of shots and it was very blatant. I'd be surprised if Coach Williams didn't bring it to the attention of the refs.

I'm not sure why the officials didn't call it all.

Yes, my calculation is that Illinois hit five threes during the second half that all should have been disallowed because the shooter was being protected by a blocker, not a screen. It looked like football.

The most egregious non-call was with 1:14 left, when David Noel was first blocked, and then grabbed around the neck.

My big question is why this issue never came up in the post-game press conference.

My joke is Illinois is great at blocking, just not that good at tackling. They have done the same thing all year, even against UWM in the Sweet 16. With TV ratings
(and ad rates) up quite a bit with Illinois in the picture, I was talking bout a fix quite a while ago. Without those moving screens, NC would have won by 25 ! Not to mention going over the back on offensive rebounds and all the people Luther Head knocked down to make steals against Arizona and UWM. Head made 4 steals in 39 minutes against Arizona - 0 personal fouls ! My main joke was how can you tell when the Fighting Illini made a steal.... When the opponent is flat on the ground and the Illinois player is going in for a layup ! I am biased against Illinois, I admit, bit I will root for the Bears..they don't cheat !
I am from Milwaukee and I am a huge Packers fan, but I am more a fan of fundamentals, team play, and following the rules. Illinois figured out how to bend or break the rules. I hope Coach Ryan at Madison can address this next year.

The reason the refs didnt call the moving screens was becasue they didnt call any of the offensive fouls on sean may.you cant drop your shoulder like May does
