UNC Stat of the Day:

"The Duke of Dallas"
How did I miss this? Back in August, Matt Doherty (current coach of SMU) wrote a blog post (who knew he had a blog?) defending him calling SMU "The Duke of Dallas" in SI. I'm sorry, but this makes me throw up a little in my mouth. Let me preface this by saying that when Doherty was coach at UNC, I was very supportive. I thought he got a bad wrap. Not to say he was perfect, but I don't think the players handled the situation that well either. That said, Doherty has a habit of saying the wrong thing at times. This is one of those times.

I can understand that he has respect for Duke and all that blah blah blah, but as a true Carolina fan, there is no way I'd ever want to emulate Duke or hold them up as a model. Didn't he know that his remark would illicit a strong response from Carolina fans? I guess that is the point, at times Doherty speaks without thinking it through.
Comments:
Just read Doherty's blog response to the discussion over his "Duke of Dallas" comment in SI. Seemed pretty object - even to me, avid Tar Heels fan that I am.

As if Doherty cares what we think of him. He got dumped and you expect him to stay true? I know I would be a little bitter if I was treated that way, especially when his recruits won it all after he left.

Yes, Doherty's "recruits" (but not his "players") won it all but only, surprise, surprise...only after he left. Why? Because they never became his "players" in any true sense...only when Roy came were Matt's "recruits" able to play to their potential as the champions they ultimately became!

Does anyone really think these same recruits/players would have won the national championship under Matt Doherty? No? Well,I agree. I don't think so either!

Where can I go to watch the Heels play b-ball in Dallas?

State Sucks!
