UNC 88, Virginia Tech 94
At least we made a game of it at the end. UNC finally showed some spirit in the last 10 minutes to slowly whittle away Virginia Tech's 23 point lead. I wasn't optimistic about our chances, but we cut the deficit all the way down to 3 with 20 seconds left. However, it was too little too late as VT was able to hold on. Tywon Lawson put on a clinic down the stretch (ending with 16 points). Roy needs to let him be that aggressive all game. Despite a mediocre performance, Hansbrough led the team with 19 points and 16 rebounds.
For most of the game, we shot poorly and Virginia Tech kept sinking shots. VT just beat Duke so they are on a roll. They man handled us much of the game and scored at will. It was painful to watch. Our guards looked totally overmatched.
All of this after what I thought was our best start of the year. At the 15:43 mark in the first half we were winning 17-9 after shooting 70% from the field. But it went down hill after that. At the half we had just 9 assists to go with 9 turnovers and was down 10.
VT came out blazing in the second half and built a 20 point lead. Then they tried to slow the game down, which let UNC back in it. Dowdell from VT scored 25 points and looked like a first team ACC performer.
So much for that #1 ranking. Actually, I don't like being ranked #1 this early. You have a big target on your back and UNC is just not ready for that.
In other news, it doesn't look good for Bobby Frasor. He did not play in the 2nd half due to a "foot injury". More to come on this, but if he re-injured his foot, we might not see him on the floor again for a while.
