News and game summaries from a life-long North Carolina Basketball fan(atic)

UNC Stat of the Day:

Hansbrough update
Tyler's dad (who is a pediatrician) and Coach Williams said they don't believe Tyler's nose is broken. Tyler's dad said his son's nose was still straight, which is a good sign. Tyler wanted to come back on the floor after the incident, but they wouldn't allow it because his jersey was bloody from top to bottom.

Tyler Bloody at the end of the Duke game

Tyler Bloody at the end of the Duke game

Hansbrough has had a rough week; he was hospitalized earlier in the week due to an illness and now this. Gerald Henderson's forearm came down directly on Tyler's nose so I'd be very surprised if it isn't broken. Best wishes Tyler!!
Comments:
I can't believe Billy Packer. Again he shows how much he despises UNC basketball. That was obviously a malicious foul by Henderson. Hansbrough's dad is an orthopaedic surgeon instead of a pediatrician. Anyway, how sweet it is to beat DOOK twice.

Though I've enjoyed him for many years, Billy Packer
should consider retirement, as these types of
complaints seem to resurface over and over.

Coach K should step up to be the legend he is by
acknowledging the horrific play of Henderson and
suspend him for the rest of the season.

That was brutal and has no place in college sports.

Tom from California (no ACC axe to grind.)

It would be unfortunate if someone were to "unintentionally" throw an elbow into Packer's face or "accidentally" split Coach K's nose open in such a manner. And it would be a shame if any Duke fans were to suffer a similar mishap.

Packer's a joke, but it will be interesting to see if any other sports media will call him out on it. He was going for the ball, yeh right and there is no global warming.

Not a word from a Dookie in any post game quotes asking if Tyler was OK, or apologizing - just whining "wasn't on purpose".

Packer kept talking about which player Roy should choose to shoot the foul shots and whether or not it had to be somebody on the floor.

Was anybody anywhere concerned about who would shoot the free throws?

Then he kept saying what a shame it was for Gerald Henderson to have to miss a game. How about for Tyler.

The truth is that Packer wanted to go to Duke but they didn't have a scholarship open yet so he went to Wake, but Duke was the school he always wanted to attend. I think he loves Duke but not Coach K. His relations with all the NC schools is strange.

I worked with Packer when he was in the infamous "Mr. Cash" commercials and saw how much of an a-hole the man is, and how much he hates Carolina. But to her him go on and on about how "unintentional" the foul was and how the refs were all wrong, when I'm seeing the same tape he was seeing and the ball was about 6 feet from Hansbrough's face, well, it was completely over the top. The network should fire him, and the NCAA should give Henderson the boot for the rest of the season. Let's hope Hansbrough is OK.

Coach K is a Go$$amn son of polish whore! He can't take his beating like a man. He is pressing and calling time-outs into the last minute. Then he says "Duke takes full responsibility, but we didn't do anything wrong." Nice record finishing in 7th place, jerk! I don't remember Dean Smith finishing that low ever.

His coach, Mike Krzyzewski, said Duke would take full responsibility for what had happened, but that neither Henderson nor Hansbrough should have been out there in the first place.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams seemed to take umbrage at that statement, pointing out that Mike Copeland was at the scorer's table to replace Hansbrough at the time of the incident.

"Gerald was in there," Williams said. "I don't understand that. ... I was trying to get Tyler out there. It's not my fault that Tyler got the offensive rebound when someone else missed the sucker. But that is enough said about that junk."

Theres an old "Fire Billy Packer" Petition on the internet.

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Billy_Packer/

I've signed it many times. Everyone else should do the same.

I myself was very disturbed with Billy Packers comments. It continues to show why he is one of the worst commentators on tv.He showed his blatant dislike for Carolina.By stating how bad of a decision the refs made and how wrong it was to suspend Henderson is a total joke and so is Billy Packer

packer needs to understand that the speed and immediacy of todays media can no longer forgive antiquated, opinionated, and biased a-holes like him any longer. Maybe back in the early 80's it was ok for him to feel like he was reporting only to the common "unintelligent" fan. Why does he still think that no one knows anything about college basketball other than him? Why does he think that everyone is clueless as to his bias towards carolina basketball? Why doesn't he try to retain some sense of integrity and excuse himself from any mention of our program, especially covering our games? In light of his brazen comments today regarding the blatantly flagrant foul by the esteeemed mrs henderson, i move that packer may never again be held in any regard other than contempt and scorn. I find it incredibly hard to believe that CBS continues to renew his contract and broadcast his view askew. i also agree that if coach k did in fact have any class he would admonish the street thug niggah tactics of that piece of shit henderson, remove him for the year, and at least try to retain some dignity. sounds like nothing of the sort is going to happen. god forbid any of us ever wish any ill will or revenge on DOOK for this completely classless act. OUR coach would never stand for it, and god bless carolina for having a man with personal integrity at its helm, rather than a count mumford look-a-like. Duke is now and will always be an abomination to the game and to the sanctity of human interaction.

I think we've all had enough of bill packer's BS. This guy clearly dislikes carolina. henderson was definately not going for the ball. The replay clearly showed it. Packer couldnt be more wrong about the incident and really should be fired because he is awful. Now back to henderson...what the hell was he thinking??? He definately deserves the suspension..what a bonehead play.

Packer kept spouting off about who was going to take the free throws and about the eligibility of someone on the bench and that Danny Green was our best shooter and so he should, as though anybody was even considering that.

Very strange.

Billy Packer's comments and the Duke coach's defensive reaction are outrageous in light of Henderson's wreckless play. Hansbrough could have sustained very serious injury: concussion, cranium or jaw fracture. I am offended by Packer and the Duke coach's focus on Henderson's intent. His "intent" is as irrelevant to what happened before the eyes of a national audience as is that of the drunken driver who hits a bystander accidentally. For the record, there were six eyeballs on the floor belonging to three referees who made the call collectively and after much consultation according to the rules governing NCAA play.

And I am less than ecstatic about Roy Williams' collegial exchange with the Duke coach on the sideline after the incident. Dean Smith or his predecessor Frank McGuire would have told that sanctimonious bastard to get Henderson out of his fucking house!

I have never liked either the Duke basketball program or its coach. Right now I have no respect for either. Perhaps Gerald Henderson might step up with maturity and offer a personal apology to Hansbrough. That's the right thing to do-- regardless of his intent on the court.

You know, when I was playing high school baseball they had a rule that you couldn't run over the catcher, to avoid Pete Rose--Ray Fosse type injuries and one game I did it, even though I really didn't mean to. I leapt up and apologized to both the umpire and the catcher and told them I didn't mean to crash into him and the umpire didn't throw me out.

Maybe if Henderson had gone over and acted like he cared about Tyler's well-being it might seem different.

Maybe if Henderson had gone over and acted like he cared about Tyler's well-being it might seem different.

I think he walked away because Tyler was about to whip his a$$.

Please go to the site listed previously and sign the petition to fire Billy"ABC" Packer. He obviously hates Carolina and any semi-educated basketball fan mutes his comments.
As far as DOOK goes, they continue to push, flop and otherwise bump their way to a 7th seed and have the nerve to cry foul when the refs actually call one on them. Maybe with his one game suspension, henderson can watch Carolina film and see the proper technique of blocking shots: extending left arm straight up in order to meet the ball at it's highest point. Not the tomahawk swing from the waist that he chose to bloody Tyler. I was pleased with the grace and decorum the Heels showed which makes them the class of the league. Go Heels

Here's K's quote last year on Jim Larranaga suspending one of his own players for hitting another player, time to step up Kazooski:

"It sends chills through my entire body to hear what Jim did," Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "Honestly, if he was here right now, I'd give him a big hug. We need more coaches to have the courage to step up in situations like this and say to our kids, 'That's wrong; I'm not making excuses for you.' If I were in the same situation, I hope I'd be gutsy enough and strong enough to do the same thing, but I can't swear to you that I would. If a big-name coach did something like that, people would be fitting him for sainthood by tomorrow.

When Tyler Hansbrough went down I was naturally upset with his being hurt and watching the first angle of the replay it did not appear to me to be a malicious hit on Tyler and was therefore not affected by Billy Packer's comments. Two things however changed my opinion - the front angle of the replay showing the elbow to Tyler's face initially gave me second thoughts. The second and final piece of evidence for me about the blatant intention of Henderson was his indifferent reaction to being ejected from the game. If he truly did not mean for that incident to happen I would think he would have made some sort of argument to the referees against being disqualified. So anyone who has doubts about the intention of the foul (Mr. Packer) dont bother looking at the tape of the play; look at the expression on Henderson's face as he walked off the court.

Unbelieveable! Billy Packer hates Duke with such passion - and I realize Carolina fans may only hear him talk about Duke during Duke-UNC games, but he can't STAND Duke. Even when Duke is favored, Billy is constantly ripping Duke on the air. The game with Georgetown - he should've been kicked off the air for his comments about Duke while they we were WINNING!

Everyone has an opinion about Henderson's actions - including major media outlets - and no one agrees. Did he do it intentionally? Probably not. Was Henderson frustrated, mad, and trying desperately to get a blocked shot on Tyler (like Duke had shots blocked all night)? Hell yeah.

But for anyone to think that some 19 year old kid went IN with the INTENTION of BREAKING Tyler's nose is not only ridiculous, but that's hateful (understandably so..) But seriously, I don't think any UNC player or Duke player goes in trying to inflict lasting damage on anyone else. You're talking about NBA careers here, and if you're talking intentionally trying to derail that, you're wrong.

It is refreshing to read comments along the lines of what I have been thinking and what I saw. I was afraid after listening to Packer that my Carolina tinted glasses were affecting my both my sight and my analysis. Thank you for confirming both my corrected eyesight and that my analysis has not deteriorated beyond what some of you already believe it has.

Some will consider Hansbrough being the recipient of a hard foul. This is what Packer, Coach K and the Dookies would like to believe as well as for the rest of us to believe it too. I really am not so sure because I have never seen someone try to block a shot with their elbow.

While various forms of “payback” I have considered would be satisfying. I have decided the best would be for Henderson to finish his career at Dook being 0-8. He is on his way right now at 0-2.

Kay-ron Oh and you sure are giving a lot maturity to a 19 year old. You seem to think it is not possible that a 19 year old can do something stuff or maybe he can’t because he plays for Dook…. Oh please…Sell me a bridge.

As a Terp fan and fellow Duke-hater, what a malicious cheap shot. If Sheldon Williams or JJ Reddick took a shot to the face like that, Coach K would be going ballistic. Then he has the gall to imply that Hansborough shouldn't have been on the court. IT'S NOT YOUR DECISION, COACH K!! Terp fans remember blowing a 10 point lead with a minute to go against Duke. Congrats to UNC for putting away the Duke Pukes.

Once again Coach K, Duke University and Blue Devil basketball in general have been outclassed by UNC - before, during and after the game; all aspects.

Duke's approval rating just below W's - where it belongs.

It's been reported that Henderson has developed Anal Glaucauma.
I really can't see his ass playing in the first ACC Tourney Game.

Henderson was deliberate in throwing a full power forearm to take Hansbrough out. This isn’t the first time that a Duke player has lashed out after the game has been (supposedly) decided. Duke, under Krzyzewski, indeed has a history of such behavior, especially against UNC. Most UNC fans remember the “Bloody Montross” incident. In the game in Durham last year, Hansbrough was hit in the head with 14 seconds left. And Kentucky fans remember the "Laitner Stomp". To call Henderson's latest blow a flagrant foul is being generous. The officials did the minimum they could do by ejecting Henderson and suspending him from the next game.

And did Henderson apologize? No he just walked away (with no class) after Hansbrough hit the deck.

What game was Billy Packer and Dick (Duke-Can-Do-No-Wrong) Vitale watching? These Duke apologists were so transparent in their efforts to minimize Duke's culpability. They even praised Krzyzewski when he questioned why regular players like Hansbrough were on the floor with less than 20 seconds remaining in a 12-point game. “The game was over before that,” he said. “That’s unfortunate that those people were in the game in that way." WHAT? It was Krzyzewski who called timeout with 50 seconds left and his team down by 13. He didn't think it was walk-on time at that point!

The ACC is known as a conference where any team can stage a remarkable comeback. Remember March 6, 1975? Wake Forest led UNC 90-82 with 54 seconds left. UNC won that game. How about Bobby Jones’ steal and lay-up in 1974 to beat Duke, or UNC’s 21-point comeback win against Florida State in 1993? Can you remember a game where UNC was down 8 points with 17 seconds on the clock, and UNC still won? I do, it was March 2, 1974 against Duke. The Sporting News calls it the most remarkable comeback in college basketball history. Maybe Krzyzewski thought this game was over, but Williams knows best: you never under estimate the Devil(s).

Hell, after the last two losses UNC was criticized for not being tough enough. The likes of Packer and Vitale blamed the Maryland loss on UNC not playing the full forty minutes. So, just who was on the floor? For UNC: Hansbrough, Danny Green (10 minutes), Deon Thompson (13), Bobby Frasor (9), and senior walk-on Dewey Burke (3). For Duke: Henderson, Jon Scheyer (35 minutes), DeMarcus Nelson (35), Marty Pocius (3), and walk-on Steve Johnson (1). Paulus would have been in there I’m sure, except he had just fouled out.

Roy Williams said it best, “ . . .both teams had ‘em in. … In fact, we had a substitute (waiting to check in) if you want to go back and look at that. If you go back and look Michael Copeland was sitting up at the (scorer’s table) because I was trying to get Tyler out of the game. It's not my fault that Tyler got the offensive rebound and somebody else missed the sucker."

You're right coach . . . 'nuff said.
