UNC Stat of the Day:

UNC gets #1 seed and tough(est) region
The 2007 NCAA Tourney seeding was set yesterday and UNC got a 1 seed in the East as expected. That's where the good news ends though. All the analysts I've seen have agreed that the East is by far the toughest region.

First, Marquette could have been a 5 or 6 seed. They ranked 20th in this week's ESPN poll. To compare, Duke, which received a generous 6 seed in the West isn't even ranked in the top 25.

If we get past our first two games, we will likely face a Texas team that took Kansas down to the wire in the Big 12 championship game. They also have the best player in the country in Kevin Durant. Many analysts were saying Texas could have been a 3 seed.

Lastly, Georgetown is the 2 seed in the East and they have been on fire of late. They won the Big East championship. I've heard more analysts predict Georgetown to win the East. Out of all of the 1 seeds, UNC seems to be the biggest underdog to win their region. There is a lot of concern about Carolina's inconsistency, but the ACC Tourney just showed we can put a string of tough games together.
Comments:
The Midwest and South regions are more of a challenge for FL and OH St.

Midwest Region is the toughest - power ratings show they have 4 of the top ten powers (FL, Wis, TX A&M CC, and Oregon) and 9 of the final top 25, and also includes traditional tournament teams AZ, Purdue, ND, and UNLV plus ACC's MD and GT. Noted coacheare FL's Billy Donovan and AZ's Lute Olson.

South Region is second toughest - power ratings show they have 2 of the top ten powers (OH St and Memphis) and 6 of the final top 25, including #5, and also includes traditional tournament teams BYU, Louisville, Stanford, and Memphis, plus ACC's VA. VA challenge may be Louisville's Rick Pitino.

East Region is third toughest - power ratings show they have 2 of the top ten powers (UNC and Georgetown) and 6 of the final top 25, and also includes traditional tournament teams Marquette, MI St, USC, AR, TX, and Georgetown, plus ACC's UNC and BC. Noted coaches are TX Tech's Bobby Knigh, MI St's Tom Izzo, TX's Rick Barnes, and Georgetown's John Thompson, Jr.

West Region is fourth toughest - power ratings show they have 2 of the top ten powers (Kansas and UCLA) and 4 of the final top 25, and also includes traditional tournament teams KY (are they looking for a Duke - KY rematch?), Villanova, IL, IN, Gonzaga, and UCLA, plus ACC's Duke and VT. Noted coaches are Tubby Smith and Gonzaga's Mark Few.

Pomeroy had Marquette 28th, which would be the last 7th seed. Sagarin has them 36th, which would be barely a 9th seed. Thus, the committee has them squarely in between the two.

I don't know anyone who follows college basketball seriously anymore who uses the wire service polls for analysis purposes. Both wire service polls had Carolina 8th last week, while Pomeroy and Sagarin had the Tar Heels number one.

we definitly have the toughest region...it is rediculous but if we make it out of our region there is no doubt we are the best team in the country...its a huge challenge, but i think the heels are up to the challenge
