UNC Stat of the Day:

UNC 86, Kentucky 77
Boxscore | Recap

UNC won another game in similar fashion to the previous six. We had moments where we looked unstoppable followed by long droughts where we couldn't hit the side of a barn. We started the game going 2-3 from the field and then followed it up by going 1-11. We closed the half by going 7-10. Danny Green provided a much needed spark toward the end of the first half by scoring 8 straight points. Danny had another solid performance going 8-11 from the field and scoring a team high (and career high) 20 points.

For a third straight year, Kentucky kept Tyler in check for much of the game although he did tally a double-double (going 10-12 from the free throw line). The refs were inconsistent again. They called a bunch of touch fouls, but Tyler got mugged on several occasions with no call. He could have gone to the line twice as much. Kentucky Coach Gillispie suggested that Hansbrough wasn't the innocent victim on all those fouls:
"I think sometimes the offensive player may initiate more contact than the casual fan may think," Gillispie said.
And Kentucky's freshman standout Patrick Patterson had this to say:
"Coach wanted a nasty game instead of a pretty game," Patterson said.

It sucks to be Tyler sometimes. Teams are going to come out with a specific game plan to hack and whack him and then suggest that he's the one initiating the fouls.

Wayne had an off day (especially in the first half) but ended with a quiet 18 points on 6-16 shooting. He made a couple of nice shots in the second half.

Before the game, reports indicated that Ty Lawson would not play. Fortunately for us, those reports were wrong. Ty did a good job scoring 10 points and collecting 6 assists. He didn't show any ill effects from his sprained ankle.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Bobby Frasor. Bobby has struggled this year from behind the arc, but came out of his slump with a vengeance against UK by going 3-4 for 9 points. He even pulled up on a fast break and nailed a 3. I loved it!

While we are off to our best start since 1998-1999, I'm only marginally satisfied. I know it is early, but after watching UCLA (and Duke though it is painful to admit it) earlier, I'm not sure we are as explosive as those teams. We are still showing the same kind of inconsistency we had last year. We don't seem to have the killer instinct either. We should have blown out Kentucky (Gardner-Webb beat them by 16 at Kentucky).

Re: "It sucks to be Tyler sometimes. Teams are going to come out with a specific game plan to hack and whack him and then suggest that he's the one initiating the fouls."

Roy agrees with other team's opinions of Tyler's overly aggressive play.

Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie reportedly said after the game that "I think sometimes the offensive player may initiate more contact than the casual fan may think." To which Williams responded by saying the following about Tyler: "He ... hits people ... he's just a bull in a china shop. And all those pieces of china like to hit him back."

Roy and Tyler both know that its the guy who retaliates who most often gets the foul call. 6-9, 250 pound bullies get too much preferential treatment.

If the refs paid heed to Williams honest acknowledgment and decided to call the games fairly, Tyler would more often than not ride the pine with foul trouble; unfortunately, that has happened only a few times per season. Tyler is following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Montross and May. The Heels sixth man has always worn black and white stripes.

Re: "Wayne had an off day ...?" Really? Ellington went into the game averaging 18 points and he scored 18 points. He is likely the Heel's best overall player.

Re: "While we are off to our best start since 1998-1999, I'm only marginally satisfied." Sobering ACC thought - Clemson has started 7 - 0 and defeated Gardner Webb by 29 points on 11/24; GW beat KY on the road by 16 on 11/7, a greater margin than UNC achieved. Take heed; early, out of conference stats against pansies carry little weight. Roy elects not to challenge his players before ACC play begins.

Re: "We don't seem to have the killer instinct either." You don't have the talent. Roy only has maybe 3 blue-chip players on his roster. They will be challenged to make regional NCCA play. It will be an interesting season.

Dear Anonymous (or should I call you: "UNC has beat my team so many times that I'm going to go negative on this blog comment"?)

You are wrong on about every point. Roy doesn't think Tyler's play is "overly aggressive". Wayne did have an off day (did you actually watch the game or just look at the stats?). UNC definitely has a lot of talent (name five schools with 10 stronger players on the team). Good luck.

It must be very frustrating for people who dislike Carolina to watch Hansbrough play. He is the toughest, most hard-nosed player to play in the ACC, EVER. And guess what? He makes alot of contact with the hackatylers WITHOUT fouling. Nobody tries to draw a charge against him because he does not lower his shoulder. He pump fakes and shoots half-hooks with 2 or 3 defenders hanging on him. I think whinning about Tyler's hustle qualifies Mr. Anonymous Tyler-basher as being the biggest whinniest pansy of them all. (and he's probably a dookie.)

Robbie,

Take the blinders off and watch the season develop ... UNC has a good coach and maybe three or four strong players ....

re: "(name five schools with 10 stronger players on the team)"

You pick'em - some suggested teams:

Memphis
Kansas
Texas
Georgetown
Duke

plus:

UCLA
Michigan St.
Tennessee
Pittsburgh
Clemson
Vanderbilt
Villanova
Gonzaga
Virginia
Florida
Connecticut
Washington State
Vanderbilt

These are not Iona, S.C. State or Penn want-a-be teams .... it'll be another month before the scrimages are over and you play a quality team.
