UNC Stat of the Day:

Roy and the Kansas sticker
Last night I turned on the championship game with about 3 minutes left to go in the first half. At one point they showed ol Roy sitting in the crowd. I was a little surprised to see what looked like a Kansas Jayhawk sticker on his shirt. At halftime he participated in an interview with CBS and had a jacket on, but you could still see part of the sticker sticking out.

I turned to my wife and said: I know some of the Carolina faithful won't like that.

What do I think?

I'm as big of a Roy Williams fan as you'll find, but it didn't sit that well with me. I know Roy spent 15 years at Kansas, but that was the team that just beat us badly a couple of days ago. Root for the Jayhawks sure, but why wear the sticker? I'm sure he meant nothing negative by it, but you have to know some Tar Heel fans won't like it. I also know Roy won't care if people didn't like him wearing it. Ultimately, this is a very small issue in the grand scheme of things and let's hope it doesn't get blown up more than what it is: a college coach rooting on his former team.
Comments:
I don't care about the KU sticker. What I care about is the fact that the Tar Heels were the most poorly prepared team for a big game that I have ever seen. It was if they were surprised that the game was Saturday night.

Some of the folks on the InsideCarolina forum are going ape s**t. I've got no problem whatsoever with the sticker.

I'm a Jayhawk fan and I thought it was his way of showing love for his old team. I was upset with Coach when he left but got over it when I found out we got Coach Self. Don't be mad about it, he has always said that KU his is second favorite team. Alot of us still love coach and cheer at Allen Field House when we hear the score of a UNC game. Good Luck next year hope we meet again in the final four but for the NC

it's okay for him to say he's routing for his old team, but he shouldn't wear the sticker, in my opinion.

I have been a die hard tarheel fan for over 15 years since I moved from Ohio, I was shocked and hurt by the jayhawk shirt, it's ok to support your old team but wear a nonsupportive shirt or the team your with now, what a slap in the face to all the tarheel players. He needed to look at the game 48 hours before, just one question, why no time out. GO HEELS

i'm from kansas. roy is a baby and wants everyone to love him. the dude has emotional problems.

go hawks!

I am a lifelong die-hard Tar Heel fan, but lets face it folks,we have one of, if not the most, arrogant coaches in college basketball. Roy is a great coach but he has proven two years in a row now, that he is completely unwilling to deviate from his gameplan when it is obviuosly not working, i.e. Saturday night. Also the hording of timeouts when his team is totally rattled is absurd. What good are timeouts at the end of a game when your team won't be in a position to win it? Bill Self used his when Carolina was making their run and Kansas took the hardware home. I was part of the outraged camp seeing the sticker Roy was wearing-just another example of his arrogance. Roy holds all the cards here folks, and he knows it. Personally, I don't know if that's a good thing or not. Maybe UNC should have gone after Self in 03 and left Roy and his stickers in Lawrence. Enjoy this one Jayhawk nation, I hate to say it but I think Ol' Roy took one for his former team.

My theory is that he saw some KU fan that insisted he wear the sticker and he couldn't resist. Maybe he just wanted to watch the championship game "after all you have to root for somebody"

Everyone should chill out. Kansas gave us Dean Smith. We lent them Roy Williams (and Larry Brown). These programs have a history. There is no hatred there, at least from this long time Tar Heel fan. It is not like he wore a Duke sticker.

i wasnt real pleased with him wearing the sticker..but honestly whats the big deal? The only thing still bothering me is saturday nights embarassment.

I do care that Roy Williams had a Kansas sticker. I actually pulled for him and Kansas when he was there. But I had a hard time getting over his jerky us around about coaching at Carolina the first time. I feel like we lost to Kansas because of bad game mangement on Williams part. I would probably get over that in a few years but he put a dagger in my heart when he sat in the stands with a Kansas sticker and showed much more excitement than in the game he actually coached. If he feels he owes Kansas for the way he left them giving them a pass to the national championship is not fair to his Carolina faithful. I no longer count myself a Williams fan. I'm not sure how to reconcile that with being a life long Carolina fan.

There was not a single RAMS CLUB member I spoke with at the Alamo Dome who was pleased with the sticker. I myself,as a Carolina fan, who travel to S/A did not appreciate it after viewing the ku/UNC game. Roy meant no harm BUT I wonder how the current UNC players felt when they turned on the tubed and saw after just getting absolutely spanked. Then theres thier coach wearing that particular teams logo. I also did not know the majority of ku fans hated Roy so much but after sitting in two different sections I sure found out.

I am reading all of the comments that have been posted and I agree with the disappointment in Roy. I forgive him for his total bomb in preparing his players for the game and kinda knew that he was going to blow it because of Kansas. I hope to hell we never play Kansas it sucks every time we do. Come on Roy you look pathetic wearing that sticker trying to suck up to the Jayhawk faithful, "Want your job back? Excited over Bill leaving for OK ST?"

Remember Ol'Roy told the world in 2000 that he didn't give a "shi(r)t" about UNC ... but he gladly accepts your checks!

You don't see him on the sidelines terribly often wearing a powder blue blazer or tie do you?

When last has he publicly said anything positive about the university other than the basketball program that he runs?

slap in the face he must wants to coach at ku when self leaves

It’s odd… I went to KU when Roy left us for UNC. These are exactly the same style of comments that were all over the university and Lawrence papers. I wrote a note then defending him, and I will do the same now. Roy is a PERSON, and as such has feelings. The guy gave up his dream by saying no UNC once in 2000, and couldn’t do it again in 2003. While it hurt me to see him go, I totally understood. Now, after all he has given you, you tear him down because he supported a team he loves? Roy can cheer for WHOEVER he wants, it’s his life. It has nothing to do with UNC, it had nothing to do with the game on Saturday. After the game was over, he became an observer, and watching a KU vs. Memphis game, he cheered for KU. Get over it. Just because he loves where he came from doesn’t mean he loves where he is at any less (clearly since he chose UNC over KU 5 years ago). Maybe he should have stayed at Kansas if this is all the respect UNC fans give him. Hence, I say to you what I told the haters at KU 5 years ago: “You are the traitors; not him.”

You will be hard pressed to find a bigger Carolina fan than I am. I live in Kansas, married a Jayhawk before Roy came to Kansas, and went to San Antonio with my best friend (also a Jayhawk) to watch the Final Four. I was pleased to see the sticker on Roy's shirt. I have enough faith in the man's character to assume that he had told his team what he was going to do. As for his team not being prepared: how is the team that plays like this team did all year suddenly NOT PREPARED? This was a mental breakdown, maybe on the coach's part, maybe on the players' parts, but I believe, if I believe anything, that THEY WERE PREPARED! I have said all year that this is not the year for UNC to meet KU because they were so well matched. We simply didn't show up. Good teams have bad nights; this was ours. Again, congratulations to Roy and his boys on a great season. And kudos to Roy for showing some loyalty to a great program that made him a name to be reckoned with. Get off his back. I am so tired of defending him to both KU people and now Tar Heels. Are the people angry with him willing to burn him in effigy? You should be proud that he is this loyal! Go Roy and Go Heels. I hope that everyone who is complaining is unable to get a ticket to Detroit next year. I will be there, cheering on my Heels.

Misplaced Heel

I have been always been a Tar Heel fan. Watched the ups and downs. I have never seen a more embarrasing moment for Carolina Basketball than Saturday night. And then after Roy and his sticker Monday night I am starting to wonder where his "heart" was Saturday night. If a picture is worth a 1000 words than Sat, and Mon, night spoke volumes. Will this be the way things are the next time we play Roy's "Old" team? As for going to Detroit next year, right now I would not go to the local High School gym to see any team coached by Roy.

Why don't all you stupid insecuref ans grow the hell up and let the man do whta he wants to. I mean damn all it was, was a damn sticker and you guys whine over that, get a life. It's your favorite team and Roy's his own man. He doesn't need to verify with anyone what his intentions were cause he already knows! So all you whiny ass Heels fans back up and back off, PEACE!!

I don't recall seeing Roy in Tarheel gear on championship Monday in 93 after Carolina rolled up his Jayhawks in the semi's. I also don't recall seeing Dean Smith donning Jayhawk apparel in 91 when Roy got his ass handed to him by rat face (Coach K) the first time.

If you think it was OK to root for his old team, then why is it not OK to wear a sticker? The significant quality in supporting a team is what you feel, not what you wear. I don't think Roy could have done that much better; they simply had much better big men and our perimeter shooting was not very good.

I thought williams sold us out anyway. I, as a fan for over 40 years have never been so hurt in all my basketball life, so i can't even begin to imagine how the players feel. He didn't really lose ,he had another team to help coach. He should leave unc because he can't coach in the ACC any way. If he wants to wear kansas logos you should have stayed, you can have only one team and if it's not UNC,then C YA!

WHAT DO YOU THINK DEAN WOULD SAY?
AND ABOUT HIS COACHING THE LAST 3 MINS. OF THE GAME. WOULD IT HAVE KILLED HIM IF HE CALLED A TIMEOUT. HELL, THEY'RE NO GOOD AFTER THE GAME. FLASH BACK TO LAST YEAR AGAINST GEORGETOWN. PLS. FOR GOD'S SAKES !!! CALL A TIMEOUT !!! MAYBE NEXT YEAR WE'LL GET TO THE FINALS, HE'LL REMEBER TO USE THEM.

I agree 100% with curlie. I have been a Tar Heel for almost 50 years. However, over the years, a lot of our fans have become conceited JERKS. Relax about the damn sticker, already. What a pathetic way to lash out. So we played a bad game against a terrific team - life goes on. No one is more hurt by that loss than Roy and the team. To whine about what ulterior motive brought about that loss is juvenile. One of my pet peeves are so-called fans who are "fairweather fans". Learn to lose gracefully without having to blame someone and "attack" someone. You sure loved Roy when he won a national championship in 2005, but now, as sore losers, you have to find a way to crucify him. Roy is a PERSON. Saying no to UNC in 2000 was the right thing for him at that time. Given a second chance, in different circumstances, he said yes in 2003. People, life does not revolve around only UNC. I respect that Coach Williams still cares about KU, and he has every right to cheer for them. Sure it hurts after we got beaten so badly by KU a couple of days earlier, but that has nothing to do with Coach's loyalty to UNC - so give up the pity-party and quit being so judgmental. Coach Williams is a quality person, as well as a quality coach, and we are lucky to have him --- that is unless we run him off by being idiots!

Cozygroove is full of it. Boo hoo -- you are soooo hurt. I have been a fan for over 50 years and I think the team and fans are hurt and disappointed because we had a bad night. It happens. Someone has to lose. Coach is loyal to UNC. To state that he "helped coach" the other team is absurd. You are a poor loser! We are lucky to have Roy, and it's idiot fans like you who should leave -- you give our school and program a bad name.

We, as Tarheel fans, should respect Roy's attachment to his former team, and we should respect the amazing record he achieved at Kansas, and we should be grateful that he chose to coach at UNC. Roy must be emotionally relieved that his departure from Kansas didn't ruin their program. There is a lot of luck involved with winning a national championship. To expect a national championship every year is very naive and unrealistic. I think a lot of you so called fans take 2005 for granted and expect way too much from a coach and his players. Such selfishness could lead us to where Duke is right now.... Unable to recruit and with a sorry image around the country. Can't any of you who're complaining appreciate this year's final 4 team? What a great team! Kansas had a better team. When everyone assumes that UNC will win a title every year it takes the fun and excitement out of the game. If the Ram's Club members take offense at Roy's wearing the Kansas sticker, screw them. They should try to get off their butts more during the games and cheer like normal fans, especially since they have the best seats. Complaining about Roy puts the Whine in the Wine and Cheese.

I have been a Carolina fan every since 1982 and I am just so dissapoointed. Everyone is talking about the sticker but I was mad long before I saw Roy with that sticker or pin on. I believe Roy gave that game to Kansas, I don't care what anybody says Roy gave our championship away because he felt guilty about leaving Kansas. I will never respect him as Carolina's coach ever again. I can deal with a loss but I cannot deal with handing over the game like he did. I believe our team's spirit was killed because the team knew how Roy felt about Kansas, and then he sent those guys out there with no coach. He abandonded those guys on the court. How can you have timeouts after being beaten like we were beaten. Roy should have stayed in kansas and now he can go back to kansas. I don't give a sh.. about
Roy.

WOW u all were talking a lot different about Roy in 2003. does it really matter if he wears a dnm sticker. all it really was was a peace offering to POed hawk fans. any way it was put on by a former KU player.

KU NCAA champs!

Any Heels fan who doesn't think Roy is a great coach and a great recruiter does not deserve to see UNC win the championship. Guys, we did REALLY well this year. The Kansas game was unfortunate, but could have been predicted. A lot of experts picked Kansas over UNC. It's not because they thought Roy would throw the game, or because they simply didn't like UNC, it's because Kansas was a really bad match-up for us: they had a ton of bigs, good defense to our bad defense, and a tremendously deep bench.

I am glad UNC has an experienced, veteran coach in Roy Williams. Incidentally, if this loss causes Tyler/Ty/Wayne to stay another year, I think ultimately it will be better for the franchise, because it'll give next year's freshmen some leaders and teachers and set up the next few years of UNC basketball.

The poster who says they've been a fan since 1982 and are so disappointed.... blah blah.. and who says that Roy threw the game.. This blogger needs to know that we do not need trashy fans like you anyway. Please abandon the Heels, you don't deserve to watch them anymore. You are probably a filthy dookie anyway, so just crawl back into your slimy cesspool and fester in your pitiful world.

As far as the comment about loaning us Larry Brown, he IS a Jayhawk now. Like Bill Self said when he was first introduced as KU's coach, "...I've had conversations with coach Larry Brown and he said; 'I've coached at UCLA I've played and coached at North Carolina. Both great programs, but there is NO PLACE like Kansas'".

Who cares what Roy wears? I like the fact that he doesn't care what people think. It's not Roy's fault the Heels lost the game. Was it Roy's fault when they played like a bunch of losers in the 91 Final Four? Was it Roy's fault when they played lousy in the 95,97 98 or 2000 Final Four? No, Roy wasn't even the coach then. Something is wrong with the Carolina system in general. When you show up to the Final Four as many times as the Heels have and lay an egg you have to start looking at the whole system. I get tired of watching Carolina have the best team and best talent every year and then embarrass themselves in the Final Four. The same thing will undoubtedly happen next year.

chris mcmillan and many others like him do not understand what it takes to win a national championship. A lot of coaches and players have given their opinion which can be found in books written by them. Basically, most coaches who've won it all attribute their national championship to luck. Chris mcmillan and his likes say there's something wrong with the program for Carolina to have played in so many final 4s with only 5 national championships to show for it. Besides UCLA, is there any coach or school who's consistently won the tournament? I find some of the above comments absolutely ridiculous and it shows what a bunch of selfish so called fans UNC has attracted.

If you people can't appreciate a reg season ACC championship, Acc tourney championship and a final 4 appearance then YOU DO NOT DESERVE TO RIDE A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BANDWAGON! GET OFF AND GET LOST.

Anonymous says that fans like me should get lost! He can't just handle the truth. Let's look at the facts. The facts are that no program in the NCAA has had the number of All-Americans and talent that UNC has for the past 25 years. Most every year UNC has the most talent. No other team can say that, except possibly Duke for a few years. Yet they still win only four championships. My main point is not that they don't win the championship it's that they play their worse game of the season in the Final Four. If you play well and lose that's one thing but when you stink up the arena year after year something's wrong. Deal with it.

Chris, I think you're the one who needs to DEAL WITH IT. They lost. Kansas was a better TEAM. Hoops is a TEAM SPORT. It doesn't matter how many McDonald's All-Americans you land. Carolina gets a lot of good talent, so does Kansas, UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, Florida, and on and on. How can a team full of NBA "Superstars" lose to Puerto Rico? Basketball is a team sport, dude. I think you know a lot about recruiting and all of the hype involved with college hoops these days, but you do not know anything about the actual game. People who put wild expectations on players, coaches, and programs, especially those jerks in the Rams Club, ruin hoops for all of us purists who just love the game. Give us good old fashion Jefferson Pilot/Food Lion ACC basketball any day. I'm very proud of the 2008 Tarheels. These guys played too loose in the first half against Kansas like they had done several times earlier in the season, and before they realized it they were down 40-12. But they made a tremendous comeback. It fell short. Chris, I don't think you have the intellect to appreciate Carolina Basketball. I'm sure if they ever won another National Championship you'd be one of those smug dudes. Actually, you remind me of the dookies. You should jump on that sinking ship.
