UNC Stat of the Day:

UNC 66, Kansas 84
Boxscore | Recap | Game Flow

It is an understatement to say that this game didn't go the way I expected. I imagined a tough game, but for Kansas to come out and punch us in the mouth the way they did--we couldn't overcome it. We got it all the way back down to a 4 point deficit, but Kansas took control again in the final minutes of the second half to secure a 18 point win. And despite the great comeback, Kansas still outscored us in the second half--40-39--so they won that half too.

StatSheet's Game Stats put this game into perspective. The first half was our lowest scoring half of the year. Our total points was our lowest of the year. It was our worst FG percentage of any game (35%). Our next worst percentage was 38% against Ohio State. It was also our least number of assists. So the numbers speak for themselves, this was one of our worst games from a stats perspective.

Now for the players. No one had a great game and outside shooting was especially lacking. Danny Green gave us a few bursts and shot relatively well (46%), but he also led the team with 5 turnovers. I was shocked when Wayne Ellington was named the UNC player of the game by CBS. I can only assume they did that because he led UNC with 18 points, but he was a dismal 1-9 from 3 point range. When your "best" outside shooter shoots 11% from 3 point range, you know you are in for some trouble. After a while I was screaming at the TV for Wayne to stop taking 3 pointers. At least Danny had some success.

Tyler played ok, but wasn't able to take over the game as he has previously. The Kansas bigs definitely gave him some trouble. Bill Self had a great game plan: take it to the UNC big men. And it worked. We couldn't defend their big guys. They were tougher.

Where in the World is Ty Lawson? That was a question I was asking myself for much of the game. Gone was the dangerous slasher. Gone was the consistent outside shooting he gave us. Gone was the leadership. Does he already have one eye on the NBA Draft? Was he still babying that ankle? At least Wayne went down firing. Ty went down without much of a fight. Extremely disappointing.

And what about Roy? Should he have called more timeouts? Every other coach seems to use up timeouts when their opponents go on big runs. Roy typically doesn't. He did eventually tonight, but it was too late. But that's just Roy. He's never used many timeouts and he probably never will.

I'm left with a feeling much like that after the Georgetown game last year. In fact, if I look at my blog post after that game, I had similar comments. Ty lost his aggressiveness, Wayne couldn't hit anything from deep, etc. Is this a trend? Can we win even if Ty and Wayne stay? Maybe they just don't have what it takes to win at the Final Four??

But I don't want to get too down. This was one heck of a season. We beat Duke on their Senior Night. We went undefeated on the road. We won the ACC Championship and ACC Tourney. And we went to the Final Four. All good stuff for sure. It is just a shame because this team could very well be the best team in the nation, but will not be taking home the NCAA trophy on Monday night.

Time to decompress. The end of the season always seems to come so suddenly. Now another 7 months before Late Night with Roy....

Comments:
this goes back to what i said at the beginning of the year. As much as i love my tarheels..i just dont get it. Why is it we have to be getting pounded to realize we have to play defense and we have to pick up our intensity. This is the final four for god sake..you should know you have to bring it. Although we made a great comeback..you just cant expect to pull that off with a team as good as Kansas. What a horrible loss.

I love Carolina basketball but it just looked like they had the itis in this particular game. They came out slow, lathargic, with complete disinterest. I have rarely seen this team, since Tyler Hansbrough was recruited, lose the battle for the loose ball. We simply did not show up and got beat by a very good Kansas team. The "comeback" was not even that impressive to me, as it seemed that Kansas simply lost their poise for a few minutes. Roy tried to get the team going by bringing in Will Graves, and Mike Copeland early on, but when your starters cannot hit, as we have consistently proven as a team that we cannot hit the three consistently, you cannot win every ball game. As much as I want to say that it was entirely UNC's fault that they could not score with any consistency I would be taking much deserved credit to Bill Self. He realized, as so many coaches in the ACC should have by now, that Hansbrough simply does not want to attempt blocking shots. Self had his team run it into the paint and simply shot over Hansbrough who has been taught to play position. Kansas schooled us in the paint, something that has not happened since the Georgetown game. I seriously never thought that there would be a game that could make me angrier than the Elite Eight game from last year, but low and behold Kansas has delivered a game that will frustrate myself and all Carolina fans for another year. The only good news is that I cannot imagine a single player leaving the team after this embarassing lose. We also have 3 High School All-Americans coming in for this new season. If we cannot get it done this upcoming season then something is wrong with the philosophy of basketball coach Williams wants to impose on the opposition and what this group of players is capable of doing. I have faith in the Heels and their chances of bringing home the National Championship in the upcoming season.

The Tar Heels simply got beat. There is no other way to say it. They showed up looking like they had a case of the itis (slow, lethargic, and sleepy). Nobody could hit a shot and there was absolutely no transition offense for the team. That being said Bill Self coached an excellent game, creating a game plan of attacking Hansbrough on the offensive end. Hansbrough is not a shot blocker. He simply gets position in the lane and tries to force an offensive foul. No ACC coach has figured this out and for what reason I have never figured out. It was an embarassing lose for my Tar Heels, one even more so than the Elite Eight game against Georgetown last season. I hope I never see anything like this again from a squad that was blowing teams off the court in the opening rounds. A team with fresh legs somehow suddenly became tired and incapable of hitting any kind of shot.

i hate kansas knw but wuth the way we played i dont think we deserved to win

I agree i did not think there could be a loss worse than last years elite 8...this one is definately harder to swallow

I have been a Carolina fan since I first started watching b-ball in 1979 when I was nine. I have watched as year after year Carolina has the best team but rarely finishes with a championship. This year was no different. Carolina can have the best team and still you can pretty much count on the fact that they are going to lose in the Final Four. They have been to 17 and only won 4. That's a pretty dismal percentage. For whatever reason the Tar Heels come out and play in the Final 4 like they couldn't care less about winning. This year's edition was no different. Great talent, great coaching but horrible execution and energy. How can you not be ready for the Final 4? Who cares how many times you beat Duke and win the ACC if you get embarrassed in front of the nation in the nation's biggest spotlight? Let's admit it, this game was embarrassing. Even if Hansbrough, Ellington and Lawson stay next year it will be more of the same. Great year, unbelievable talent and an embarrassing loss in the NCAA Tournament to a less talented team. You can count on it!

i do not beleive UNC was that good they have a half assh defense, and UCLA or Memphis would beat them easily ACC has been overated for a while know

Did YOU SAY LESS TALENTED UNC was popped in the mouth u all didnt play crappy u got out played Tyler was stopped almost completly by better Kansas big man and as the guy above me said horible D led to ur demise
