InsideCarolina.com: Copeland: 'It's a Done Deal'
On a brighter note, it looks like we may be close to
signing 6'8'' forward Mike Copeland out of Winston-Salem. Copeland was yet unsigned mainly due to a grades issue. He has been taking some classes this summer to get his GPA up. According to
this report Copeland feels confident he will be in Carolina blue next Fall.
A quote from the article sheds a little more light on the prospect:
"Copeland averaged nearly a double-double (17.8 points, 9.1 rebounds) per outing in his senior campaign, after which he earned Player of the Year honors for the Central Piedmont 4A Conference, and was selected to the All-Northwest N.C. team. Copeland was named to the All-State Second Team by two separate outlets - the Associated Press and NCPrepReport.com."
Just based on his stats and reputation he's not going to have instant impact, but we can use all the help we can get next year.
Roy Williams Comments on Kansas Self-Report
Today
Roy Williams commented on the Kansas Self-Report. The verdict: Williams "only spoke to one alumnus about giving graduation 'gifts' to seniors" and referred the alumnus to the Kansas Compliance committee. More pertinent quotes:
"I did not know the rule that `once you are a student-athlete, you are a student-athlete until death.'
Kansas never gained a recruiting or competitive advantage - the students had completed their eligibility and it was seen as a `graduation gift.' I have never promised anything to a prospective student-athlete, including playing time."
First the media hounds Roy because he "can't win the big one" and after he does, they jump all over an opportunity to paint him in a negative light by blowing this story way out of proportion.
The Kansas Report
Geez, talk about the
blowup of the year. There is a report that Coach Roy Williams approved small gifts for his players after graduation. You wouldn't believe the coverage on the news tonight. All the local TV stations ran out to Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh to ask locals what they think of the situation. Heck, Coach Williams hasn't even had a chance to defend himself yet. He is suppose to make a statement tomorrow. We are seeing first hand, how the media tries to make something minor into a major event. It must be a slow news day.
